DESCRIPTION:Come Find Rest and Renewal\nSummer Retreats for Pastors and\nStaff Ministers\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship\, in collaboration with CBF state and regional organizations across the Fellowship\, are inviting pastors and staff ministers to gather for a time of rest and renewal with a community of their peers this summer. \nThese spiritual retreats are scheduled from mid-June to early September and are designed to offer opportunities for worship\, spiritual practices\, holy conversation with colleagues and time for quiet and rest. They will not include intense educational programming\, content about things happening in CBF life\, or prognostications about post-pandemic church. \nThe Georgia retreat will take place at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain\, Georgia\, August 16-19. The retreat is open to all staff ministers\, and spouses are welcome. A monument only says\, ‘At least I got this far’ while a footprint says\, ‘This is where I was when I moved again.’” \nRaise your hand if you have been part of a church visioning process! I see the eyes rolling now\, and I have some bad news for you. Gone are the days of completing one such visioning process and living into your new congregational dream for ten or twenty years. The current rate of change in church life calls for more frequent and habitual review. The good news is\, as your church pauses more often for evaluation\, there is less life you have to assess. It is easier to lean a church closet if you do it a few times a year rather than leaving it for a decade! (I see you\, VBS planning teams!) \nThe process of routine evaluation lends itself to a healthy culture that says\, “This is where we were when we moved again.” At CBFGA it is time\, yet again\, for such a review. \nBack in April\, our Coordinating Council retreated together in North Georgia. We spent a few days reflecting on areas of growth for our organization\, which to be completely candid\, are plenty! As we discussed what we value and the needs we see for our Georgia churches\, three common themes rose to the surface: \n\nContinuing to connect churches with each other for retreats and resources\nSupporting congregations in seasons of transition\nEncouraging a culture of vocational calling through testimony\, scholarship\, and financial aid\n\nThe energy and depth of conviction bubbling around these topics was clear. Though we do not have catchy titles just yet\, these three areas will become what Jody called “tent poles” for our organization’s future. Self Lectureship at Mercer University’s McAfee School of Theology was established in order to promote the practice of faithful and effective preaching of the gospel. \nThe lecture series is named in memory of Dr. William L. Self\, Pastor Emeritus of Johns Creek Baptist Church\, Alpharetta\, who was nationally recognized as a gifted preacher\, pastor\, author\, lecturer\, motivational speaker\, and innovator in church growth. Dr. Self achieved considerable acclaim by leading Wieuca Road Baptist Church\, Atlanta\, to a place of prominence in Georgia and the nation. As pastor of Johns Creek\, his leadership and influence brought the church to the vanguard of fast-growing churches. \nThe purpose of the lectureship is to enlighten and inspire those whose calling is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. The lectures seek to instill in students and pastors a passion for better preaching by providing worthy models and by offering seasoned instruction and encouragement. Each year the lecture series features a nationally recognized preacher. \n \nThe Rev. Dr. Teresa L. Fry Brown is the Bandy Professor of Preaching\, a chaired professorship created in 1986 with a gift from B. Jackson Bandy that is considered by many to be the country’s premier chair in homiletics. Fry Brown has taught at Candler since 1994\, and in 2010\, she became the first African American woman to attain the rank of full professor.
