To: Participants in the Deacon Summit
Thanks be to God for the blessings of the 2013 Deacon Summit.
From all accounts, this was a significant event for all of us who participated in it. We enjoyed good fellowship and engaged in meaningful conversations. We heard some inspiring presentations, both in the plenary sessions and the breakouts. We explored challenges in our congregations and communities, and we discussed ways that pastors and deacons can partner together in more effective ways.
Perhaps more than anything else, we experienced a shared desire for the Word and Spirit of God to produce more fruit in our own lives and in our churches. And at the end of the Summit, 105 of us made personal and public commitments to be a better partner with God in our personal lives, in our own churches and beyond our home churches.
We also committed to participating in the training and fellowship provided by the Baptist Deacon Network - THE BAPTIST DEACON NETWORK HAS OFFICIALLY BEEN LAUNCHED. So where do we go from here? In the next few days, the "Leadership Team" will be meeting by conference call to discuss that question: Mike Hendley, FBC, St. Simons; Don Brewer, FBC, Gainesville; David Keel, FBC, Augusta; Mark Whittaker, HBC, Harlem; Susan Broome, FBCX, Macon; Connie Jones, FBCX, Macon; Carol Palmer; Smokerise BC, Atlanta; and Carol Younger, Northside Drive BC, Atlanta. Please keep this group in your prayers.
Also, would you please give us your response to the following options?
I would like for one state-wide summit to be planned in 2014 (suggest location) I would like for two regional summits to be planned in 2014 (suggest locations) I would like for three regional summits to be planned in 2014 (suggest locations)
Also, would you offer any other thoughts/ideas/suggestions that have come to mind since we met in Macon?
At the Georgia CBF gathering in Augusta (November 3-4), there will be a breakout for deacons. Please put that date on your calendar.
